Heartworm

Heartworm is a common disease in dogs in Palau.
Adult heartworms live in a dog's heart and lungs, and are transmitted by mosquitoes.

Heartworm infections shorten the lifespan of dogs considerably.  We see here the real heart of “Smelly”, infected with heartworms.  He was king of his neighborhood, but he died from complications of heartworm because he was never given preventive medicine.  His owners didn’t know about it.

HOW TO PREVENT HEARTWORM . . .

Give your dog a MONTHLY preventive medicine – PAWS uses ivermectin, an inexpensive and effective medicine ($1 per dose) to prevent heartworm infection of your dog.  We will always test your dog to see if it is infected first, before prescribing preventive medicine.

IF YOUR DOG IS INFECTED . . .

Dr. Hernandez will provide a variety of medicines for your dog.  The elimination of heartworm is a long process, and can take about one year with regular administration of medicine.  In one year we retest your dog, and if the test is negative you can transition to a monthly prevention dose.
